EV charging equipment: what drives the unit cost
Charging equipment is an assembly, so its cost is the sum of decisions: power stage, enclosure, connector, cable and certification. This page explains the order in which those decisions actually matter.
This page intentionally contains no prices, price ranges or currency amounts.
What drives the cost
- Power stage and phase configuration: single-phase and three-phase designs diverge early and are not interchangeable.
- Connector type and cable assembly: an integrated cable adds material, a labour step and its own certification scope.
- Enclosure specification: ingress protection, material and mounting determine both material cost and tooling.
- Certification scope per destination: electromagnetic compatibility and safety testing are one-time costs amortised over the order.
- Volume and delivery pattern: tooling and certification are fixed-cost items, so unit cost depends on how they are spread.
How to lower your landed cost
- Define the installation environment first: it decides the enclosure and prevents over-specification.
- Standardise the connector and cable across several models to reduce the number of variants that need their own certification.
- Batch tooling and certification across a model family rather than releasing variants one at a time.
- Align the delivery pattern with production runs to avoid expedited freight.
How to get a comparable quotation
- Send the specification: parameters, certification requirement, destination port.
- Confirm volume and delivery pattern: trial order, repeat order, or annual frame.
- Receive supplier options with documented evidence - specification, certification, capacity.
- Compare like for like, then confirm the order route. Trade and payment run on Alibaba.com.
